SEXUAL ASSAULT GUIDELINES
If an assault occurs there are some steps that should be taken:
~Make sure the person assaulted is out of immediate danger.
~Make sure the person assaulted is encouraged to seek medical attention.
~Preserves evidence of assault by not showering, brushing teeth until after medical exam and putting clothes worn during the assault in a paper bag (plastic bags can destroy evidence).
~If the person who experienced the sexual assault goes to the hospital, call the Women’s Resource Center and an advocate will meet you at the hospital.
~And if the person who experienced the sexual assault wishes, s/he may choose to file a report with police or campus security. This report can be informal (anonymous) or formal.
If you are reluctant to go to the hospital because you worry that the medical exam will appear on your parent's insurance, the University's Student Health Services will cover the costs for the first round of tests after a sexual assault. The University is committed to ensuring the health and well-being of its students. Your identity and information will only be known by the Director of Student Health Services. Contact them at 941-7667 for more information.
